How your cost estimate works

Enter your address. We read the rest.

Most UK homes have an Energy Performance Certificate on the national register. The moment you enter your address, we pull yours and analyse what it says about your property — floor area, energy rating, current heating fuel, property type and age — and turn it into a heat pump cost estimate built for your home, not a UK average.

Why compare quotes

The same heat pump can be priced thousands apart.

Installers price the same job very differently — how busy they are, how far they travel, which brands they fit and how they size your system all move the number. On a typical £13,000 installation, the gap between two quotes is often four figures.

That's why we do the pricing research for you. We compare installers across your area and match you with the two most competitive vetted MCS installers — each quoting knowing they're being compared, so sharp pricing is built in from the start.

We do the shopping around for you — no hunting for installers or requesting quotes one by one.

02

Like-for-like comparison — both tailor quotes to your home's exact requirements.

03

Homeowners save £1,200 on average — versus accepting the first quote they're given.

What moves the price

Four things that set your heat pump price

Every quote is these four variables combined — measured from your home, not the market.

01 Model house wearing a knitted wool hat
Home size & insulation

The more heat your home loses, the bigger the system it needs — this sets the baseline.

02 White panel radiator
Radiator upgrades

Lower flow temperatures mean some rooms need bigger radiators — many homes need none at all.

03 White hot water cylinder
Hot water cylinder

Combi-boiler homes add one; homes with a cylinder usually keep theirs.

04 Air source heat pump outdoor unit being measured with a tape measure
System size (kW)

Sized from your home's heat loss, not guessed — oversizing wastes money, undersizing costs comfort.

No two homes combine them the same way — your estimate does the maths.

The £7,500 grant

How the £7,500 grant actually works

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is the government's grant for low-carbon heating in England and Wales — in Scotland, Home Energy Scotland provides the equivalent (see right). If your home is eligible, your MCS-certified installer applies on your behalf as part of the quote — there's no separate form for you to complete. The £7,500 grant is deducted directly from your installer's quote, so you never pay it upfront and claim it back later.

01

Your estimate checks eligibility — most owner-occupied homes qualify.

02

Your MCS installer applies for you — in Scotland you apply to Home Energy Scotland first, and we make it straightforward.

03

£7,500 comes off your install cost — £9,000 in rural Scotland — nothing to claim back later.

In Scotland?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers England and Wales. Scottish homeowners apply to Home Energy Scotland instead: a £7,500 grant (£9,000 in rural areas) plus an optional interest-free loan of up to £7,500. Unlike BUS, you apply yourself before installation — your estimate and installer make the paperwork straightforward.

Running costs

What you'll actually save

Heat pump running costs are lowest — and savings biggest — when you're replacing oil, LPG or an older gas boiler. Your exact figure depends on your tariff and your home's fabric — homes coming off electric or new efficient gas boilers save less.
